Updated Assessment of Protest-Related Deaths and Injuries in Iran

The report was prepared by Prof. h.c. mult. Dr. med. Amir-Mobarez Parasta (MUNICH MED, Munich) on behalf of the Iran Casualty Documentation and Analysis Network (ICDAN), with a field documentation unit in Iran and a central validation and analysis unit in Munich.

What the update adds

The assessment incorporates reports submitted after the original data cut-off and validated through 15 June 2026. Data collection was coordinated across 12 study coordinators, 86 institutional reporters, and 42 participating emergency-care and documentation sites. Each case was included only after two authorised reviewers at the same site jointly approved the record under the four-eyes principle.

• 47,871 validated clinical deaths (30,304 previously documented plus 17,567 retrospectively validated cases)
• 1,002 documented execution-related deaths (970 previously reported plus 32 additional cases)
• 48,873 combined documented basis
• Approximately 54,200 deaths as the principal nationwide estimate, applying a 10% under-ascertainment correction to the clinical component only

How to read the figures

This is not an official national registry, a judicial determination, or a peer-reviewed epidemiological publication. The figures should be understood as minimum documented counts, produced through a transparent, conservative, and reproducible methodology under conditions in which complete official data remain unavailable. No victim names or directly identifying information were entered into the central database; source identities are withheld where disclosure could create personal, professional, or legal risk.

The report separates documented clinical data, retrospective follow-up data, execution-related records, and the under-ascertainment assumption so that each analytical step can be reviewed independently.
